Chemistry 1020 Lab Manual Answers
General Chemistry Laboratories Welcome to the General Chemistry Laboratories Home Page! The format of this chemistry laboratory will probably be different from the one to which you are accustomed. Instead of performing one lab exercise per week on an individual basis, you will become a member of a group of students who will work on an assigned, open-ended problem for a number of weeks. So, in a typical semester, your group might complete three or four projects, rather than twelve pre-prepared experiments.

The idea behind this type of laboratory is to give you a more realistic experience in the laboratory. Real scientists do not have a recipe for each experiment that they perform. Rather, they devise their own experiments to test their hypotheses and gather as much data as they can. In the 'real world' there is no one right answer, and so it will be in your laboratory experience.

You will not be graded on how close you come to a 'right answer,' but rather on how you plan your experiments, evaluate your data and present your report. The lab is not designed to coordinate topics with the lecture portion of the course. However, you will need to apply knowledge gained from lecture and in some cases may learn new material which will then be applicable to lecture. In this lab course we will be concerned with teaching you how to think your way through problems, a skill which will serve you well in any field.
